In Service

Organized by Anna Leonowens Gallery, Nova Scotia College of Art and Design

January 29 to April 24, 2005

The exhibition In Service featured new work by nine Canadian fine metalworkers from across the country: Beth Alber (Toronto, ON); Jackie Anderson (Calgary, AB); Mary Anne Barkhouse (Minden, ON); Anne Barros (Toronto, ON); Beth Biggs (Iqaluit, NU); Brigitte Clavette (Fredericton, NB); Lois Etherington Betteridge (Guelph, ON); Kye-Yeon Son (Halifax, NS); and Ken Vickerson (Toronto). Their works celebrate the long history of the metalsmith-in-service.  Each artist produced work for this exhibition as a direct response to their individual interpretations of ‘service’ within their practices.  Through In Service, these artists have raised questions about function, ritual and the social politics of the materials and objects they produce, from whimsical to contemplative, including coffee and teapots, platters, candlesticks, fish servers, cutlery, and garden implements.
