Lyne Lapointe: La
Tache aveugle
[The Blind Spot]
December 9, 2005 to April 2, 2006
The
exhibition La Tache aveugle [The Blind Spot] featured eighteen
extraordinary drawings, collages, and paintings by Montreal artist Lyne Lapointe.
Through the appropriation of geometric, plant and animal imagery, and the use of rare and unusual
materials, Lapointe explores notions of the seen and unseen, the constellations
and their mythologies, the “exposed body,” and the graphic strangeness of
ancient games. This exhibition marked Lapointe’s return to a solo practice
following more than fifteen years of remarkable collaborative work with Martha
Fleming. The works that were in La Tache aveugle [The Blind Spot]
are filled with
plant and animal imagery, and laden with symbolic, historical and sociological
references, which are reflected in Lapointe’s unique selection of materials:
mica, shells, semi-precious stones, and butterfly wings, to name a few.
Overwhelmingly, Lapointe depicts metamorphosis (states of transition) in an
attempt to transcend the physicality of her subjects. The bodies in her work,
whether in representation or in the actual materials she employs, are fractured;
their vulnerabilities organized (or rationalized) by linear and geometrical
imagery. These complex works form reconstructed mythologies; when considered in
exhibition together, they define, excite, and sometimes contradict, one
another. La Tache aveugle [The Blind Spot] is autobiographical, the
rebirth of Lapointe’s independent practice and the resurgence of an aesthetic
vision that challenges and confronts the viewer.
La Tache aveugle [The Blind Spot] was organized and circulated by Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal. The national tour of the exhibition was made possible with the financial support of the Department of Canadian Heritage, through its Museums Assistance Program. The Macdonald Stewart Art Centre presented The Blind Spot with the support of the Canada Council for the Arts and the Ontario Arts Council.

The Opening Reception for Lyne Lapointe: La Tache aveugle [The Blind Spot] was on Thursday, January 19 at 7:00 p.m. Artist Lyne Lapointe will be in attendance.
On Monday, January 23 at noon, the Art Centre hosted a Brown Bag Lunch with Emeren Garcia, Head of Touring Exhibitions, Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal, who will give a public talk and walkabout tour of the exhibition Lyne Lapointe: La Tache aveugle [The Blind Spot]. That afternoon at 2:30 p.m., Garcia will give a second presentation of The Blind Spot and speak on other exhibition projects.
