Artists 1950-2000
September 7, 2004 to December 18, 2005
This exhibition provided a 50 year overview through a display of drawings, prints, sculpture, and wall hangings selected from the Art Centre’s internationally recognized Inuit art collection. The wall hangings were particularly striking in this exhibition. One of the rarest works in the exhibition is a Wedding Blanket (1960) made from bone, suede and sinew on muslin by Arctic Quebec artist Thomassie Kudluk (1910-1989), donated by Heather and Brian Ayer. An early untitled wall hanging by Olive Mamak Innakatsik (North West Territories) is richly embroidered with floss and imitates a Persian carpet. Melanie Qillulaq’s ambitious wall hanging is emblazoned with over 100 medallions showing the symbols and icons of her Baker Lake community, while Miriam Nanerluk-Qiyuk documented her family's journey to their birthplace on the Black River.
