Education Programs at the Macdonald Stewart Art Centre
Exhibition and sculpture park group programs are supported by Art Centre staff and volunteer docents for elementary and secondary school students. Programs are generally 1 to 1.5 hours in length and intended to assist the teacher in meeting curriculum learning requirements. Teachers are encouraged to view the Art Centre as a resource and to take a leadership role in all aspects of preparation and follow-up activities.
The objective of each program is to contribute to the school curriculum through active student participation in viewing and discussing original art works. The Art Centre programs have been planned in consultation with the Board of Education consultants to follow the Ontario Curriculum for Visual Arts, Language, and Aboriginal Studies.
Studio Space
The Art Centre has a medium-sized studio space available as a resource for teacher-lead activities during their visit. The studio can accommodate a maximum of 15 students at a time.
Material resources such as paper, pencils, paints, etc. are the responsibility of the teacher to provide for these sessions.

The Art Centre is internationally recognized for its Inuit art collection. A wide range of Inuit sculpture, wall hangings, drawings, and prints is always on display. The focus of the program is on the changing aspects of Inuit culture as expressed through art. The program includes a discussion of artifacts and a visual presentation.
Elements and Principles of Design
This program offers an introduction to the underlying elements and principles of design which informs the meaning of the work and how we ‘read’ visual language. It includes a visual presentation and direct application to current exhibitions through interactive activities and direct engagement.
The Art Centre has the largest sculpture park at a public gallery in Canada, featuring 35 works by prominent Canadian artists. This program examines the role of public art and leads visitors through a discussion of the evolving context of art in a permanently sited public space.
This program is designed to engage students with current exhibitions, discussing vocabulary and concepts such as curator, exhibition, public art gallery, installation, medium, abstraction, and contemporary art.
